Fabien Ecochard est photographe et réalisateur basé à Paris. Son travail photographique s’intéresse aux vies ordinaires, aux gestes, aux présences et aux situations qui composent le quotidien. Loin du spectaculaire, il porte une attention particulière à ce que Georges Perec appelait l’« infraordinaire » - ce qui est déjà là, sous nos yeux - et à ces moments où le réel acquiert soudain une densité particulière.

Ses images naissent de la rencontre entre ce que la vie lui propose et ce qu’il y projette, quelque part entre observation et imagination. Cette part intuitive et sensible nourrit une photographie où humains, espaces, composition et couleur se répondent sans jamais être dissociés. La couleur y joue aussi un rôle documentaire : elle porte la trace d’un lieu, d’une époque et de ses transformations.

Fabien développe des projets au long cours, notamment à Paris et à Istanbul, où il construit au fil des années des ensembles photographiques ouverts, nourris autant par les transformations des territoires que par la permanence des scènes quotidiennes. Son regard interroge, souvent de manière implicite, ce qui façonne une ville et ceux qui l’habitent : les circulations, les appartenances, les représentations et les formes de coexistence qui s’y inventent.

Son premier livre, Cosmopolite, consacré à Paris, constitue une première étape de cette recherche. Il développe depuis une pratique photographique d’auteur, fondée sur la construction de récits dans l’image et entre les images, au-delà des frontières de la « street photography ».

Sa pratique se déploie en numérique comme en argentique, dans une filiation avec la photographie couleur et la tradition du boîtier Leica M. Il entretient depuis plusieurs années avec Leica une relation étroite, nourrie par des projets, des ateliers et des échanges autour de la photographie.

Réalisateur de métier, il mène en parallèle une activité dans le film publicitaire, documentaire et institutionnel, où il prolonge son rapport au réel et au récit à travers le mouvement et le temps.

Fabien Ecochard is a photographer and filmmaker based in Paris. His photographic work is drawn to ordinary lives, gestures, presences and situations that shape everyday life. Away from the spectacular, he pays particular attention to what Georges Perec called the “infraordinary” - what is already there, right before our eyes - and to those moments when reality suddenly takes on a deeper intensity.

His images emerge from a meeting between what reality offers and what he projects onto it, somewhere between observation and imagination. This intuitive and sensitive approach shapes a photography in which people, places, composition and colour are never disconnected. Colour also plays a documentary role: it carries traces of a place, a time and the changes taking place within them.

Ecochard develops long-term projects, notably in Paris and Istanbul, building open-ended bodies of work over the years, shaped as much by the transformation of places as by the persistence of everyday life. His work often implicitly explores what shapes a city and those who inhabit it: movement, belonging, representation, and the ways in which people coexist within increasingly cosmopolitan environments.

His first book, Cosmopolite, focused on Paris, marks a first step in this ongoing research. Rather than being defined by the category of “street photography”, his work is rooted in an authorial approach, built around creating narratives within individual images and across sequences of images.

His practice spans both digital and analogue photography, informed by the tradition of colour photography and by the legacy of the Leica M system. He has maintained a close relationship with Leica for many years, through photographic projects, workshops and ongoing exchanges around the medium.

A filmmaker by profession, he also works in parallel across advertising, documentary and institutional film, extending his interest in reality and storytelling into moving image and time.
